The first thing you should do is look at landscaping designs of other houses in your neighborhood. This is not to say that you should emulate the landscaping designs of your neighbors, but at the same time you can get ideas from them that you might not have considered otherwise.

A popular landscaping design that many people like to incorporate in their yard is flowers under trees in a circular border manner. However, if you like this idea you must consider how much shade various kinds of flowers need. For example, if you want flowers that require a significant amount of sunlight, you should not plant them under a tree that is thick with leaves.

When it comes to landscaping design you will want to use mulch. Cedar mulch is a popular kind of mulch, but unfortunately the nice redness of the mulch lightens over time with sun and rain. If you want a mulch that keeps its color longer, there is a new kind of rubber mulch available.

Many people like to incorporate shrubs into their landscaping design, usually for privacy reasons, but remember they need pruning at certain times during the year. If you do not do this, the bushes can get too large and cumbersome.

The main thing you need to know when it comes to figuring out definitive landscaping designs, is the climate that you have. If you live in a climate that is temperate throughout the year, you have the of planting flowers that will last more than one season.

For more information on landscaping designs, go to your local garden center and ask customer service representatives. You can also ask landscaping companies to come and give estimates/ideas. Landscaping design ideas for your yard and garden can evolve over time, giving lifelong enjoyment of your creation.

Southwestern landscaping is a very popular landscaping design not only in the Southwestern areas but as well as those who wants a touch of Southwestern art in their own homes and locations anywhere in the world. This type of designing has been formulated due to the weather conditions prevalent in the Southwestern areas in the United States.

Southwest Landscaping is basically land designing with native plants that do not need too much water and have low level of pollen to keep allergies away when in the peak of summer. Grass is therefore not used in this type of landscaping as it can consume so much water and is very expensive to grow, and is replaced with either stones or rocks. Native flowering plants are started right away before the gravel landscaping begins.

Southwestern landscaping, particularly the one called xeriscaping is basically using native plants and flowers in the dry areas to be able to adapt in the sparse water supply in these areas. Native plants like cactus’s, yucca, ornamental grasses (not the species that needs so much maintenance), hibiscus, succulent plants, or other varieties of flowering plants that can grow with limited supply of water and abundant sunlight and heat are best in this type of landscaping design.

It is also becoming more and more popular because of the lesser need of maintaining the landscape. Because there is less need of watering the entire lawn everyday, every homeowner becomes a Southwestern landscaping prospect. This is also the same reason why it is being adapted all over the world, and most especially to countries with more dry seasons.

Aside from the native plants, succulent plants that belong to the crassula family like crasulla portulacea, crasulla capitella, and crasulla tetragona are also very important in the Southwestern landscaping task. These species of plants are usually considered as flowering plants in many months because of its beautiful and healthy green leaves. Other succulent plants like aloe vera, and haworthia correcta are also basic in this dry landscaping type.

These plants grow even more beautiful and healthy with less water; therefore owners get to save a lot of precious water in maintaining the landscape. Also, they get to save a lot of effort and labor fees because there is little need in hiring laborers or doing the task every so often. So it is really best that native plants are used in landscaping than getting exotic ones that aren’t sure to thrive in a different weather and maintaining conditions.

Mexican feather grass, yellow pampas grass, blue oat grass, or purple fountain grass are just some examples of ornamental grasses. Such grasses can live and thrive in extremely arid, dry climates so it is also another good addition to the native plants in designing the Southwestern landscaping. It will be very useful in growing garden beds or walkways.

Aside from that, it will also minimize dust formation that is basically out of the extreme dry weather conditions in the Southwest of America as well as in the same weather conditioned areas around the world. These types of ornamental grasses will also need less water and maintenance; although, you have to cut overgrown ones in a periodic manner to keep the grand and elegant beauty it exudes.

All in all, Southwestern landscaping is far more useful in areas with the same climate conditions as the Southwest of America.

If you are planning to improve your lawn or garden by landscaping it you do not need to hire a professional landscaper just to realize your dream of having a beautiful landscaped garden. You can do it all by yourself. All you need is some basic knowledge about landscaping, the right tools and equipment and of course patience and some hard work.

How do you really make your garden look like it was landscaped by a pro? Well, there are some basic things that you have to know before actually starting to do the landscaping. Here are some tips to remember:

Ask yourself why you really want to have a landscaped garden. This way, you will have a real purpose while doing the works; hence, you can focus on accomplishing your goals.

Define the real purpose of your landscaped garden when it’s done. How many persons in your household will love it or benefit from it.

Decide whether your landscaped garden should be used only by your family or will some party be hosted here.

Out of this information, you can now go about deciding which landscape design you will adapt for your garden. Details such as the kinds of plants to be used, paving, lights and layout can now be conceived. After that, you can plan for your budget.

Choose a Theme for Your Garden

It is important to plan for the theme of your landscaped garden. With a theme included in your landscaping plan, you don’t have to buy excessive tools and supplies because you already have an idea on what you will need and how many you need. You may want to have a formal garden, a gothic one, garden with herbs or with trees and shrubs.

If you’re not sure about themes for landscaped garden, you can always get a landscaping book or magazine that you can consult. Better yet, the internet is where you can look up for different themes that you can use for your gardens.

Taking Care of Your Landscaped Garden

Now that you’re done with your do it yourself landscaping activities, it’s time to take some rest. But, never ever forget to take care of your garden. Give your landscaped garden all the care and the things that they need in order to thrive and grow beautifully.

Be sure to water your plants the proper way; water with the right amount of water depending on the need of each plants. If you want your landscaped garden to last for years, always remember to visit and care for them regularly.

While having a full landscaped garden is rewarding and enjoyable, you may not have the time to maintain it. For those people who are just too busy for a normal garden, perhaps a somewhat recent method of gardening known as Xeriscaping may benefit you. This minimal yet stylish theory first emerged in Colorado when water levels were at an all time low. It is a great method of having a great looking yard or garden, without having to maintain it or water it very often at all.

In Colorado, many places are offering free Xeriscaping lessons in order to encourage the conservation of water. If your area is undergoing a drought, you should check with the water suppliers and see if they are offering lessons. If you attend those, you will be able to get advice specific to your region (for example types of plants to grow, how much to water them, etc).

To some, the name Xeriscaping conjures the image of a yard that consists of a giant rock bed. However, this is known as “zero scaping”, and it is a considerably different concept. It focuses on reducing your yard to nothing that requires any maintenance whatsoever. This is usually just rocks, but this shouldn’t be your goal. While keeping maintenance at a minimum, it is still possible to retain a beautiful looking yard that won’t attract the negative attention of everyone who passes by.

This might sound like it would be hard to implement, but this is not so at all. The theory basically involves choosing plants which are low maintenance to begin with, then putting them each in environments that are ideal. It is usually applied by figuring out what side of the house to place it on to get the best amount of shade, and figuring out how to group it with plants with similar water needs.

To get started in your Xeriscaping renovation, you first need to pick out all the plants you will be using. They should for the most part require a low amount of water. This doesn’t mean you can only grow cactuses in your yard. Just cut back on the really thirsty plants that you have to water every day to keep alive. You’ll want to stick with local plants for the most part, and don’t go with anything too exotic as these generally require larger amounts of water.

The second most important principle of xeriscaping is placing the plants in ideal areas. If you place them all together with plants that require essentially the same amount of water, then you will end up saving lots of water. Also place the plants in areas where they will be protected from wind or excessive sun, depending on the needs of the plants. Xeriscaping is almost the same thing as microclimating, just with more of a focus on adaptation to harsh conditions rather than avoiding them. So if it sounds good to you and you’re looking to save time and water by renovating your garden, you should look for xeriscaping lessons.

If you want to get more enjoyment from your property, as well as increase its value, try implementing some attractive landscape design ideas. Landscaping lends enjoyment, both while you’re working on a project and when you can see the beautiful finished product. Do some research, get professional advice if necessary, and make a plan.

A popular landscaping idea today is to create a walk through garden. Choose flowers that add beauty and color to your property. Ideally, you should use a mix of perennials and annuals. Perennials reduce your labor and cost while the annuals provide a colorful show. Look at various kinds of shrubs and trees to provide contrast and balance. Then add some outdoor garden lighting and stepping stones. This will encourage easy enjoyment of the surroundings.

Another great landscaping idea is to create different sections in your yard, each with a distinct feature. By incorporating one feature of each section into other areas, you’ll create a unifying flow. You don’t have to have a large yard to pull this off.

If you have kids, create a section of your yard that’s designed just for their enjoyment. Try building a wooden play structure to blend into the landscape more naturally. A treehouse can also be an interesting feature of your yard.

Most landscaping designs incorporate a lawn. Get the best kind of grass for your soil and climate conditions. Your goal should be to have a luxurious expanse of green that will set off your other landscaping features. A healthy lawn can be a showpiece set off by flowers, shrubs and trees.

Many people like to include a water feature as part of their landscaping. Ponds and waterfalls add a dramatic touch to your yard. Also, many people find the sound of water to be very calming. There are so many different products and styles that you’re sure to find something suitable.

For areas of your yard where it’s hard to grow anything, a rock garden might be the answer. Maybe it’s a spot that’s too dry or the soil conditions won’t support plant growth. Or perhaps it’s an area that doesn’t drain well and is always wet and soggy. These areas are well suited to rock gardens that feature some highly resistant plants. As well, it’s an ideal low maintenance way to add beauty to your property.

The key to your landscaping design success is unity. Start with your theme and stay with it. Don’t do changing from one design style to another. Your entire property will need to have a similar feel and look. If you have this your home will have a balanced look of symmetry and this will add all kinds of beauty to your home.

You can create a wonderful sense of unity to your landscaping design in a few different ways. The most common way of bringing harmony to your design is with similar types of plants and trees. This is easy to do and it will look fantastic.

Your landscaping design should make use of much more than just plants and trees. Flowers look great but they generally only bloom for part of the year so you need to find other landscaping design elements that will look perfect all year round. To do this you will want to look at landscaping stones and rocks, or even wood chips. You can even use granite and marble in your design, stepping stones or statues.

A theme can go a long way towards making your landscaping design incredible. If you want to attract birds and butterflies to your garden, talk to the nurserymen at your local plant store about which type of plants and flowers you require for your area.

Your landscaping design needs to be balanced. As long as there is unity your landscaping design will enhance your home perfectly.

Your front yard says a lot about you. It is the first thing that visitors see, even before they enter your home. Your front yard landscaping is the first impression that your neighbors will have about you. Taking a little time to design your front yard landscaping will pay off with years of enjoyment.

Keep Your Front Yard Landscaping Consistent With Your House

Before you decide on your front yard landscaping, take time to choose a style that fits the type of house you live in. If you live in a Spanish style stucco bungalow, choose a plant scheme that is compatible with this style of architecture. For example, consider terra cotta planters, draping bougainvillea plants and other tropical foliage. If you live in a sprawling ranch house, consider low growing shrubs and changing annuals.

Keep Your Front Yard Landscaping Easy On Maintenance

Before you invest your time and money in landscaping your front yard, take the time to do the preliminary work the correct way. Invest in a good sprinkler and drip water system, complete with a timer. For years to come, you will enjoy a green lawn and healthy plants without ever having to worry that you forgot to water.

Take the time to have your yard leveled before you plant grass and have an expert give you advice on any drainage issues you might face. Putting the extra work in before you plant can save you lots of money and work. If you don’t like the grade of your yard, it is easy to add top soil to your yard and change the level of your slopes.

If mowing isn’t your thing, consider having easy to maintain ground covers instead of grass as a part of your front yard landscaping plan. Many people prefer to have their grass behind their house and choose to landscape their front yard using shrubs, rocks, bark, or even flagstone.

Have Fun Landscaping Your Front Yard

It can be a lot of fun to show off a little personality in your front yard. While your front yard can be a great canvas for expressing yourself, don’t make it an eyesore that causes your neighbors to shudder. Having one garden gnome or a cute garden sign is fun, but having a collection of gnomes or pink flamingos can be a bit overwhelming. Strive to create a classic balance of whimsy in your front yard and your landscaping will be appreciated by everyone who visits.

No matter the size, if your home has a yard you are certain to get a lot more enjoyment from it if you undertake some interesting landscaping ideas. You can add a water feature or a rock garden, or create a secluded nook shaded by trees and shrubs. You can probably come up with even more own ideas of your to make your yard more pleasant and attractive.

One of the more popular landscaping ideas today is to create a walk through garden. Carefully select the perfect flowers to lend color and charm to your outdoor space. A mix of annuals and perennials is ideal because it reduces your labor and cost while still allowing for the more colorful show that annuals provide. Investigate various kinds of shrubs and trees to provide contrast and balance. And place some stepping stones throughout the garden to encourage easy enjoyment of the surroundings.

Another great landscaping idea is to create different sections in your yard, each with a distinct feature, then unify the entire space by repeating certain aspects of each section in other parts of the yard. You don’t have to have a large yard to pull this off, either.

If children will be making use of your yard, designate a section of it as a play area for them to enjoy. A wooden play set will look more natural and blend in with the surrounding landscaping features. Adding a tree house lends even more interest to your outdoor space.

A lawn is frequently a big part of any landscaping effort. Choose a variety of grass that’s appropriate for your soil conditions and climate so you’ll have a luxurious expanse of green to set off your other natural features. Surrounded by trees, shrubs and flowers, a lawn can be an attractive showpiece.

Many people like to include a water feature in their yard. Ponds and waterfalls add a dramatic touch to your outdoor decor, and the sound of water is considered very soothing by many people. There’s a huge variety of designs and products from which you can choose. Your only limits are your budget and available space.

A rock garden is a perfect solution for problem areas of your yard where it’s difficult for many plants to thrive. Maybe it’s a spot that’s too dry or the soil conditions won’t support plant growth. Or perhaps it’s an area that doesn’t drain well and is always wet and soggy. Putting in a rock garden that includes a few exceptionally hardy plants can be ideal for these problem areas. But it’s also an attractive and low maintenance feature for any area of your yard.

There’s no doubt that landscaping can provide you with great enjoyment, both in the process and the final result. Do your research, get some professional advice if necessary, make a plan, and get going! That’s all it takes to turn your landscaping ideas into reality.

Desert Landscaping Plants

The folks in the Southwest part of our country get to enjoy the beauty and ease of gardening with desert landscaping plants. They need little water, are hardy and also easy to transplant. They come in many interesting types, some with beautiful blossoms and others with unique shapes.

In addition to using plants for landscaping, which might include yucca, various types of cacti, and so on, you will also find that desert gardens can be used in vegetable garden plans. For instance, fruits and vegetables usually grow exceptionally well in dry climates although you would need to make sure they get adequate watering.

While creating a look using desert landscaping plants, you might find that you have some areas of the property or perhaps a side of the home with lots of shade. Obviously, this would require you to use landscape shade plants, those that will handle the hot and dry climate but also do well growing in shade. Again, the possibilities are tremendous, giving you great coverage and beautiful blooms during the year.

Listed below are just a few of the hundreds of varieties of desert landscape plants as well as a few landscape shade plants. The hot and dry climates produce many beautiful and hearty plants to choose from.

Opuntia Varieties, or better known as the prickly pear due to its colorful fruit-shaped flower bud. The bud blooms into the most beautiful, almost rose like flower.

Opuntia phaecantha variety discata, This is a very hardy plant that can survive in cold weather and will produce a beautiful deep yellow flower in the spring and summer months. It does tend to crawl along the ground and root as it goes. It has very sharp long spines that can be dangerous if planted around children.

The Agave or “century plant,” so named due to the flower stalk that is said to only bloom every one hundred years. In reality, the flower stalk appears at the end of its life, which can be as long as twenty to thirty five years. It has been used for ropes with the fiber, some for tequila, and baked and eaten.

Using Landscape Shade Plants in your Desert Garden

The Astilbe, which is also called “Feather Flower,” grows well in the shade and lots of moisture. Because of its feather like flower it complements a cactus or desert garden nicely. The flowers can bloom from early spring to late summer and come in white, ivory purple, pink or red.

Hostas are another shade variety that blends in well with desert landscaping plants. They are perennials that come in several types, some with solid green or variegated leaves. They produce flowers white, pink or purple flowers and can grow in full or partial shade.

The Liriope Spicata is one more great shade plant that looks like grass and is often times referred to as border grass. The flowers turn from white to purple when in bloom then in the fall it produces a dark berry.

Often labeled a day lily the Foxglove is extremely versatile and grows equally as well in the sun as it does it the shade. The flowers produced by this plant are striking and vary in color depending on the species. It is however a poisonous plant and should not be exposed to children and pets.

One way to keep your landscaping looking neat and uncluttered, while making it appear full, is through the use of landscaping stones. Available in a variety of shapes and sizes, they can also be used to separate different types of plants and work for soil retention in wet climates.

Landscaping stones can also be used as stepping stones to get through the area for weeding or other maintenance chores, without slogging through the dirt and mud.

Landscaping stones being so diverse can be used by the homeowner in many different ways. Some larger stones or rocks can be as big as a small car and can be useful in preventing unauthorized access to your yard by motor vehicles. However, before placing any of these larger landscaping stones along the yard make sure they are not encroaching on any rights-of-way that may have been granted for underground utilities.

Many choose to use landscaping stones, such as marble chips, in lieu of mulch in flower beds. The drawback with this decision is that any replanting may involve the need to remove all the stones before working on the flowerbeds later. White marble chips can lighten an otherwise dark area of the home’s landscaping, but before putting them in place, make sure all the flowers are in their final resting place and the appropriate steps have been taken to stop any weed growth.

One of the more popular uses for landscaping stones is for outlining flower beds, either next to the house or in isolated parts of the yard. Some stones can be used in one or two layers to set off an area of the yard, isolating it from grass or a driveway. By using appropriately sized stones, the bed can appear totally separate from the remainder of the landscaping.

Depending on the color scheme of your outdoor living space, different colors are available that can either compliment or contrast with the color of the home. While some prefer the landscaping stones to blend when put into place, others appreciate contrasting colors. Using brick-colored stones adjacent to a brick house can separate the bed, while still blending in with the home’s exterior.

Other designs of landscaping stones can be made to fit together like a puzzle to create a walkway around or through planted areas. Surfaces can be smooth or rough, depending on your intention of the path’s purpose. For walking on, rough surface stones can help prevent slipping in wet weather.
